Lamont Peterson returns with impressive eighth round stoppage

Lamont Peterson looked rusty and tentative early in his first fight since December 2011, but once he got a feel for Kendall Holt, he took over tonight at home in Washington, DC, overwhelming Holt and scoring an eighth round stoppage to retain the IBF junior welterweight title.
Peterson (31-1-1, 16 KO) dropped the first three rounds on the BLH card, and was probably down 29-28 at best at that point, with Holt having the better of things in the early minutes of the fight. But after Holt came out fast in the fourth, Peterson flat-out took over, flooring the New Jersey native, which sent Holt (28-6, 16 KO) into a tailspin from that moment on.
Peterson would floor Holt again in the sixth, and in the eighth round, he continued to unload on Holt, who found himself back to the ropes, absorbing punishment, before referee Tony Weeks stepped in and called a halt to the action at a good time to do so. He gave Holt, who looked like he'd packed it in by the sixth at the latest, every opportunity to get back into this fight, but it simply wasn't going to happen.
For Peterson, this is a very, very impressive return, as he pretty much dominated a good fighter once he figured out his plan of attack. Holt has always been a wild card sort of guy, with perceived mental weaknesses and lapses, and Peterson took advantage, hurting Holt and then never relenting.
Peterson will look to move forward quickly as he now is promoted by Golden Boy, so fights with the likes of Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse, or a rematch with Amir Khan are all in play.
